Michigan Man Wins $2 Million on His “Worst Day Ever”

A 49-year-old Michigan native, who prefers to remain anonymous, was having an otherwise terrible day when he won $2 million in a Lottery Bonus Instant Game.

“I was having the absolute worst day of my life,” he said.  “I was stressed from work and it seemed like everything that could go wrong was going wrong.”

“I stopped to buy a soda and had a winning $10 ticket to turn in.  I put another $10 with it and told the clerk to pick out a $20 ticket for me.”

As it turns out this $20 ticket was worth $2 Million!

“I scratched the ticket in the store and I was in shock when I saw I had won $2 million,” said the player.  He added that he waited for everyone in the store to leave before asking the clerk to scan his ticket. “…[I] asked her to scan my ticket.  She looked it over and hit the floor when she saw I won $2 million.”

“Winning the Lottery feels great. My wife and I have always found a way to make ends meet, but it hasn’t always been easy, so winning is a huge relief,” the winner said.

We’re so happy for the lucky anonymous winner and hope he and his family will enjoy their prize!  Guess it wasn’t such a bad day after all…

**FreeLotto Pro-tip: The player in the story played several tickets of the same game.  Playing several tickets for the same game instead of different games is an excellent idea.  Buying tickets in bulk to one game has a better chance of winning than buying several tickets from different games.  See our blog for more tips and tricks to increase your chances of winning.

Win instant cash playing scratch off games

Here at FreeLotto, we love the idea of people winning instant cash by matching numbers in a lottery game. Which is why we’ve always been most interested in instant games, also called scratch-off games or scratchers, where players scratch off the UV ink on a game ticket to reveal the winning (or losing) numbers.

Two reasons why scratch offs games are fascinating:

1. People win money instantly. Big money.

  • Last week, a 24 year-old Michigan man hit the $4 million jackpot playing the Michigan Lottery $100,000,000 Diamonds instant game. He just walked into a Marathon gas station in Detroit, and asked the man in line in front of him what he should play. The man suggested the $100,000,000 Diamonds game, so he bought one $30 ticket. Instantly his life changed forever. With his winnings, the player plans to help his mother with her finances, buy a new home, a new car, and take a trip with his two young children.
  • Also last week, the North Carolina Lottery announced a Charlotte-area resident won a $1 million prize playing the Ultimate Millions scratch-off game. He purchased the ticket at a convenient store. (Ironically, the one he owns.) The winner took the lump-sum payout, and plans to buy a house and save for his daughter’s college fund, he told the NC lottery.
  • Just today Georgia Lottery officials announced that Rhonda Taylor of Grady County won $7 million playing the Georgia Lottery Max the Money scratch off game. This is the second time Ms. Taylor has won the GA Lottery. In 2009, she won $350,000 also playing an instant game.

2. There’s real strategy involved when playing instant games.

Unlike lottery draw games, there’s a very real science to increasing your odds of winning. We’ve written about these strategies a great deal on this site: How to win instant lottery scratch-off games.

In short, since the cash value of the ticket is determined at the time of printing, a strategic decision must be made by a person as to how many total tickets and winning tickets to print, and for what amounts, and how the winning tickets are placed into each roll and how the rolls are distributed, both in terms of timing and geography. All of these decisions must be made to ensure the game remains exciting while all the prizes are not won too early or before most of the tickets are sold.

Since we love the idea of people winning instant cash, we tried to create games that match the same fun and excitement. Hence, FreeLotto.

FreeLotto offers 6 ways to win big money every day. And you don’t have to even leave your home to play or even spend money on a ticket. You can play for free.

Great Tips and Strategies for winning Michigan Lottery Instant Game Jackpots

Don’t buy another MI Lottery Instant Game ticket before reading these 5 strategies guaranteed to improve your odds of winning.

The Michigan Lottery offers a number of games and ways to play, including online with Instant Online and Keno Online. And yes, you can download a mobile app so you can play from anywhere – just like FreeLotto, except with us you play for free.

State-only lottery games you can play are Club Games, Keno, Daily 3 and 4, Fantasy 5, Lotto 47, and Poker Light. You can also take your chances with the multi-state games Mega Millions, Powerball, and Lucky for Life. The Michigan Lottery introduced the Monopoly Millionaires’ Club in 2014 along with 22 other states, but subsequently cancelled it after poor sales.

MI Lottery also offers the incredibly popular Instant Games, also called scratchers or scratch offs, where a player scratches off a ticket to reveal possible instant cash prizes. Each instant game consists of different themes, play styles and prize structures. The Michigan Lottery typically launches about 70 new instant games a year with ticket prices ranging from $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, and up to $30 and jackpots as high as $4 million.

Can you win instant cash playing a Michigan Lottery instant game? Absolutely! Just last week Bob Amidon of Ann Arbor won $500,000 playing the Lottery’s Win Big game. Since its launch in July, gamers have won over $5.3 million playing Win Big alone.

Wouldn’t it be great to win instant cash playing MI Lottery instant games?

The following will show you how you can improve your odds – significantly!

Here’s the basic idea: All the MI Lottery draw games – despite what you might read online – are games of pure chance.

Sure, there are small things you can do to slightly improve your odds of winning the MI Lottery jackpot. But in general, the only real way to improve your odds is to purchase more tickets. The more lottery tickets you possess, the better your chance of becoming rich.

The Michigan Lottery instant scratch-off games, also known as scratchers, are different.

Let me repeat. Michigan Lottery drawings are games of chance because the numbers are drawn randomly – without human intervention. Scratch-off tickets are not random because a real person must determine how many total tickets to print, how many will be winning tickets and for what amounts, and how the winning tickets are dispersed geographically. All of these decisions are carefully crafted to maximize excitement and to draw players in and keep them playing.

In short, there is a formula to MI Lottery scratch-off games. The challenge is to figure it out.

January-coverA famous article in Wired Magazine details how Mohan Srivastava, a geological statistician living in Toronto, figured out one of the formulas.

“The tickets are clearly mass-produced, which means there must be some computer program that lays down the numbers,” Mr. Srivastava is quoted in Wired. “Of course, it would be really nice if the computer could just spit out random digits. But that’s not possible, since the lottery corporation needs to control the number of winning tickets [otherwise it could go bust]. The game can’t be truly random. Instead, it has to generate the illusion of randomness while actually being carefully determined.”

The article goes on to describe his approach. Although his particular method will no longer work on most (probably all) scratch-off tickets, the principle of “illusion of randomness” does still apply.

We can’t tell you the exact formula for your favorite MI scratch-off games, but we can offer strategies for dramatically improving your odds for winning money when playing instant cash games.

Michigan Lottery Instant Games 5 Best Strategies

If you really want to win more when playing the MI Lottery instant lottery scratch-off games, start doing the following:

1. Buy all your Michigan Lottery scratch-off tickets from the same roll at the same time.
lottery-tickets-rollYou can assume there are at least a few winners in every roll of tickets. Every time you get a losing ticket, you reduce your chances of losing by one ticket.

Do not buy different games. If you buy a new ticket from a different roll, the pool of losing tickets is much larger and your chances of getting a winning ticket goes down.

2. Don’t play everyday. Rather buy in bulk.
Building on tip #1, the odds are better if instead of buying one ticket every day for a week, you spend the same amount and buy 7 tickets at one time. Better yet, purchase your monthly allotment of scratch offs during one visit. Buying 30 tickets at once is much better than buying one a day.

3. Let others in Michigan buy the losing tickets.
If you’re able to and have the time, hang around and watch others play. If you see a prolonged losing streak from a specific roll, your chances of getting a winning ticket increase because scratch-off tickets are sold with a guaranteed number of winners and losers in each pack.

You could also make friends with the cashier who could keep track for you.

4. Have the retailer’s computer check your losing tickets.
This isn’t about improving your odds necessarily, except that after scratching off 10, 15, or 20 tickets, it’s easy to miss matching symbols or numbers.

5. Strategically plan your play using math and a spreadsheet
Most scratch-off games publish on their websites the odds for each instant cash game. Many will often post prizes that have already been won for each game.

If you do nothing else, at least be sure to check the appropriate website to see which games still have top prizes available.

freelotto-spreadsheetNow to really improve your odds, let’s do a little math (there’s a spreadsheet at the end to make it easy).

We start with a simple concept: When MI Lottery tickets are sold and prizes won, the odds of winning change.

For example, if a game has sold many tickets, all or nearly all the top prizes could have already been won, so the odds of you winning that $1 million went from very small to virtually zero to perhaps zero if all the top prizes have been claimed.

However, sometimes the odds swing in your favor.

Simplifying the math for the example, let’s say 50% of the tickets have been sold but only 25% of the prizes have been claimed. Naturally, your odds of winning have gone up, or swung in your favor, by 50%. This would be a game you should play.

In reality, the odds never swing this much. In fact, most of the time, the odds vary only slightly. But a slight move in your direction can help and a few times, you’ll find significant swings that can make a worthwhile difference.

We’ve created a spreadsheet you can use to do the math for you. All you need to do is check the game’s website and fill in the numbers.

Here’s how the spreadsheet works for a single game:

First go to the Michigan Lottery website to find the numbers for the game.

You can find the numbers for MI Lottery here:
Page for Michigan Lottery Instant Games

Page for Michigan Lottery Instant Game remaining prizes

In column A, fill in the available prizes.

In column B, fill in the odds, which are usually stated as “1 in X.”

In column C, fill in total available prizes.

Column D automatically calculates the estimated number of tickets sold. The formula is:

Odds X Available Prizes = Printed Tickets

Column E automatically calculates your chances of winning.

In column F, fill in the claimed prizes as published on the MI Lottery website.

Column G automatically calculates the number of remaining prizes.

Column H is an important column. It estimates how many tickets have been sold. This is a number not provided by the website, but it’s critical in determining how the odds have changed.

To generate a reasonable estimate, the spreadsheet uses the estimated tickets sold of the lowest prize amount because this gives us the largest sample size and will be more accurate than the numbers with fewer prizes. You may have to adjust this number depending upon what numbers are available in the earlier columns.

Column I automatically takes the estimated tickets sold and subtracts from total tickets printed to get the estimated remaining tickets.

Column J automatically adjusts the odds based on the new numbers.

Column K automatically adjusts your chances of winning based on the new numbers.

Column L automatically determines how much your chances of winning have changed. Sometimes in your favor, represented by a green bold number, and sometimes against you, represented by a red number.

What does all this mean for the Michigan Lottery Instant Games?

If the odds haven’t changed much, it means that the winning tickets have been evenly distributed throughout the packs, which is not unusual, but it means you can be assured of the following:

Watch for losing streaks from any specific pack. If you see someone else play a number of times in a row and lose, you should play next. A winner will likely follow because of the even distribution strategy.

Bottom line, don’t just walk into a store and purchase a few random MI Lottery tickets, unless you really don’t care and just want to have fun. But if you want to improve your odds, these strategies do help.

Michigan Lottery $1 million winner ignores girlfriend’s warning

The last thing his girlfriend said to him before he entered the gas station was, “Don’t buy any lottery tickets.”

Fortunately the Michigan resident didn’t listen and ended up $1 million richer from a winning Michigan Lottery scratch-off ticket.

The man, who asked not to be named, stopped with his girlfriend to purchase gas in Livonia, Michigan. When the pump didn’t print out the receipt, he grabbed two $5 winning tickets from his glove compartment and went inside. He plays the Michigan Lottery regularly, so it wasn’t unusual for him to have the tickets.

Once inside, he purchased a 50X The Cash ticket and paid for it with his two $5 winners.

But he didn’t find out he was a winner right away. Instead, he hid the purchase from his girlfriend and didn’t scratch off the ticket until the next morning. It was then he realized he was Michigan’s newest millionaire.

“I showed my ticket to my parents and neither of them believed me. We immediately went to the computer to look the game up online and read the instructions again. That’s when it finally started to sink in that I had won big,” he said.

The winner chose the lump sum payment of $634,517. He explained to Michigan Lottery officials he wants to take a vacation with the winnings before investing the rest.

“We’ve always wanted to go to Scotland, and this will give us the opportunity to do that,” he said. “Maybe next time my girlfriend won’t be as skeptical when I’m feeling lucky and want to buy a Lottery ticket.”

Are you feeling lucky? Well, you can play right now for free, and nobody will tell you not to.

State lottery sales plummet 30% in early 2015

Are you suffering from jackpot fatigue?

If you are, you’re not alone.

Ticket sales for Mega Millions and Powerball games were down 30% for the first quarter, 2015.

Imagine what that’s doing to state budgets!?!

States are responding to falling lottery ticket sales by pumping up the jackpot amounts in hopes of luring back the casual player who buys lotto tickets only when the prize becomes enormous.

An interesting catch is that when fewer people play, it becomes hard to reach the ginormous prizes, for example going from $100 million to $300 million

People once impressed with a $100 million payout shrug until it reaches $300 million. Then fewer people play, so it takes longer to get to staggering prizes.

What are people playing? FreeLotto. More and more gamers are flocking to FreeLotto – the world’s largest online lottery style sweepstakes – because they realize it’s free, easy to play, and the odds are similar to state lotteries.

Check it out for yourself. Play right now.

Anonymous man wins $100,000 in Michigan’s Lottery newest game

His name is not Anonymous. However, a man from Muskegon County, Michigan, does wish to remain anonymous after winning $100,000 playing the Michigan Lottery’s newest online game, Kaboom.

Kaboom lets players wager 50 cents to $5 for a chance to win prizes up to $250,000. Mr. “He Who Must Not Be Named” won while playing the game for $2 per play, according to a news release from the Michigan Lottery.

The man does not have any immediate plans for how he will spend his winnings, according to the news release. Per Michigan Lottery bylaws, winners of Michigan-only games with prizes of more than $10,000 have the option to remain anonymous under state law or be called “The Dark Lord” or “You-Know-Who” but never “T.M. Riddle.”

Muskegon County does appear to have a little wizardry magic with the lottery in 2015. A Muskegon woman took home a lump sum of $666,243 after turning in a ticket worth $1.05 million in January.

You don’t have to travel to Michigan or even off your couch to enjoy some lottery magic. Play FreeLotto. The odds are similar to Michigan Lottery games and you can play right now.

Michigan Lottery winner hides $1 million ticket in flour jar

My favorite story of the week: A Detroit U.S. Postal Worker purchased a winning Mega Millions lottery ticket and hid it in a flour jar while he and his wife thought about it.

Then he went into work three days later and started cleaning out hhis locker. When his boss asked him what was going on, the soon-to-be millionaire told him “I got a million and I’m retiring!” After 31 years as a mail carrier.

Wouldn’t we all love to be in that position!?!

Fred Morgan had the five winning numbers (15-18-29-41-50) in the April 17 Mega Millions game.

He purchased his winning ticket at the Mobil gas station at 25828 Ford Road in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, and knew he won the day after the drawing, but he told Michigan lottery officials that he stashed the ticket in flour and a few other places while he and his wife considered what to do with the windfall.

“We watched that ticket carefully,” Morgan said. “We thought somebody may look in the sugar jar, but no one would ever check for anything valuable in the flour.”

What a great story! And you know, there’s an ever better way to play and you don’t have to hide your ticket in the flour jar. FreeLotto: It’s free. You can play from home every day. And the odds are similar.
